Robbery is a strike. Carjacking is a strike. Residential burglary is a strike. A conviction on any one of them follows a person for the rest of their life and doubles the sentence on anything that comes after it. These charges are also frequently overcharged. Robbery requires force or fear — not merely a taking. Residential burglary requires an inhabited dwelling, and requires that the person entered it intending to commit a crime once inside. Whether the prosecution can prove those elements, and whether what it has charged as a strike actually qualifies as one, are questions that have to be litigated rather than conceded.
